Supporting Bird Populations
Vision
Over the past two year, our school has been undergoing a “Transformative Indigenous Education” Program in which we have been working with members of the Indigenous community in developing our understanding of Indigenous Ways of Knowing. An integral component of this concept is the Indigenous worldview of “All our Relations”, the interconnectedness of all being, and therefore our community members as it extends to our more-than-human beings. To further our understanding of this, we have been studying the book “Walking Together”, which teaches this concept in Kindergarten language.
Action
Working with Recreate Place, we have further explored this concept by discussing how bird and bird protection are an integral part of our community. Through the work with Recreate Place, Kindergarten kids are exploring how we can help birds by creating window bird silhouette shadow collages which will protect them from harm. We discussed how we can support birds through environmental protection program and therefore further our understanding of “All our Relations” and how we can help our community. In addition to this, we have also created a restorative garden at our school. By protecting the birds, we support pollinators such as hummingbirds, which will make use of the garden we created. Overall, this is a multifaceted project that explores how we can truly apply the Indigenous Cosmology of “All our Relations” and take steps to support all our community members including the more-than-human world, in this case birds.
