Kilbride PS Actions

Vision

Our vision is to be more environmental sustainable humans venturing on the planet Earth.

Action

At Kilbride we had 3 actions:
1) G.O.O.S bins – our club wanted to reduce paper waste. They designed a Kilbride G.O.O.S bin logo so all students will recognize this bin no matter what room they are in our school. They advocated the use of this paper for brainstorming ideas, for planning out projects, for making to-do list to name a few. Where these activities don’t always need a brand new piece of paper. The students made annoucments and as they delivered the new bin to each class they educated other students about how to use it.
Our eco club was inspired to reduce the waste of paper. They see fellow students misusing paper for sketching something or writing something small and then chuck it in the garbage – not even the recycling bin. They wanted our students to do better and not ‘hurt the trees’.
2) Lights-Out – our club monitoried if classes turned out their lights when the classroom was not in use a couple of times before speaking about the importance of not wasting energy ie) electricity, by simply turning off the lights. They also added to the morning annoucments about “You have been caught with turning out your lights!” to congratulate classes for being more conscious about their energy use or misuse.
3) Pollinator Garden -we have a garden of neglect that stretches out the length the front of the school. Through purchasing tools, garden gloves, pollinator and native plants, we were able to have a community day to clean up. While doing this they learned about types of plants ie) which plants butterflies prefer vs. bees; how to mulch up leaves to give nutrients back to the soil and plants, how to water and care for plants, and finally do the physical labour of planting.
They were inspired through their attendance at the Youth Forum from some of the workshops they attended and also felt the need to clean up this garden to provide sustainable plants for the pollinators.
This is really important to our students and our community for there is a sense of pride about the ‘look’ of the school and how we are taking care of things. Not only for us as a school but for the plants and animals that we share the planet with.

Reflection & Celebration

The students grew with being more conscious and appreciative of environment actions in simple ways but having big impacts.
