Cleaning up Plastic Garbage then Planting Bee-Pollinating Flowers
Vision
Our Vision is a cleaner school property that provides bee-pollinating flowers to support the important work that bees do.
Action
Our Action Project was to remove plastics from the environment and to plant bee-pollinating flowers. We purchased a lilac bush, wildflower seeds, rakes, shovels, garden gloves, fertilizer, and spray paint (to identify our gardening equipment). The first step of our Action Project was to do a property garbage clean-up, using the gloves and rakes. This clean-up removed a lot of plastic debris that was at risk of contributing to micro-plastics as well as at risk of being consumed by wildlife. Next, the lilac bush and wildflower seeds were planted. The location chosen for planting was the front of the school near an exit that is highly used by students and staff. The beauty and fragrance of the flowers can be enjoyed by the humans, while the bees and other insects can utilize the flowers. The lilac bush will flower each year and the wildflowers are perennial.
Reflection & Celebration
Our Eco Team is a small group of students across a few different grades. We chose a small project that we could manage with our small team and one that we would feel comfortable following through with, given our lack of experience. Following our school property clean-up, we had immediate satisfaction of a job well-done. Plus, it was beautiful weather outside that was enjoyed. During our planting of the lilac bush, a staff member walking by commented on its beauty and how she was so happy to finally have a lilac bush on-site. Once the wildflowers begin to bloom, we’ll get to enjoy their beauty as well. The benefits to us are just added bonuses to the main objective, the bees!
