Barn Swallow Nesting Habitat Construction
Vision
Barn swallows are threatened in Ontario due to habitat loss. Much of this habitat loss is due to human activity but also due to climate change. For our action project, we decided to build a barn swallow habitat on our school property. We think that this project would be a good fit for our grant from LSF.
Action
In order to create the barn swallow habitat, we researched the best design. We found the government of Ontario’s best practices technical note on barn swallow nesting habitat. This plan included directions about how to build the nesting habitat, directions for best nesting habitat, and placement.
Unfortunately, our ecoclub does not have the skills to build a nesting habitat like this. Fortunately, we have worked with our school’s construction SHSM (specialist high skills major) program in order to prepare for its construction. At this time, the construction SHSM has ordered all of the materials for the barn swallow habitat and have begun construction. The barn swallow habitat should be complete by early to mid June.
Reflection & Celebration
Our students worked hard to think about the best way to use our grant from LSF and how it can uniquely fit our school grounds. We think that we have made a good choice and hope that the besting habitat will be used by barn swallows right away.
The barn swallow habitat is not yet complete. However, when it is done, we are looking forward to bringing the group of students together that have made it a success, and celebrate!
