Boyne Plant Project 2025

Vision

We had a vision to create a community garden. We had some raised flower beds that had not been utilized. We grew some seeds and planted them in our gardens with the hope that our grade 8 students and families would eventually sign up to maintain them throughout the summer. Our grade 8 students could use this time of care and maintenance towards their high school volunteer hours. We would eventually like to build more raised beds to grow an even bigger garden so that families may enjoy the benefits of the fruit and vegetables that come from it.

Action

We used our funding to purchase seeds, soil, and gardening supplies to grow and sell plants at our annual May Open House. This was to raise money for our school and promote environmental sustainability. We took the time of approximately a month to grow these plants, and then sold them each for an appropriate price. To our surprise, the plants sold extremely well, with over 100 people buying at least one fruit or vegetable. We then planted the remaining plants in our current outdoor raised beds.

Reflection & Celebration

Our students’ interest in climate action and eco sustainability increased a great deal, and everyone in this school has benefited from our super fun and educational hands-on activities. The joy on the students’ faces as they were digging in the soil, getting outdoors, and planting was so enjoyable. We hope to make this an annual thing.
