Butterfly Pollinator Garden

Vision

Our Climate Change Club put a lot of thought into what kind of Action Project we wanted to start at our school. We looked at what our school and community needed most. We also thought about what could be continued for many years to come. We decided that the best option for our community is a pollinator garden. Looking around our school grounds, we realized that there are not many places for pollinating insects to land and contribute to the ecosystem. We have many trees and lots of grass, but no gardens. The garden areas we do have, are overgrown and forgotten. We chose to change that. A couple of times a week, during our lunch hour, we go to the garden by the front door of our school and work hard to clean it up. We had to clear out old mulch and weeds, trim back bushes, turn up the soil and finally, plant the new flowers. The new flowers are specifically aimed at attracting butterflies. We know that butterflies are an essential part of ecosystems, and climate change has a huge effect on them. Our goal is to create a welcoming environment for butterflies in order for the rest of the ecosystem to flourish. Though we had to navigate certain challenges, such as continuous frost warnings, we remained determined to complete our goal. Our garden is almost ready, and the school is so excited. Not only does this garden benefit the ecosystem in our community and the lives of the many butterflies that will return to our area, but it has also sparked curiosity and excitement among the students and families. We do not see many butterflies, if any, at our school. Through this garden, we will bring life to the community and provide learning opportunities for students about climate change and the impacts we can have.

Action

We have begun revitalizing the garden at the front of our school and creating an impact on our community by improving the ecosystem. We have cleaned up the existing garden and given it new life by nurturing the growth of new plants that attract butterflies.

Reflection & Celebration

We have seen a positive reaction from community members already and look forward to seeing all of the butterflies that come to pollinate! We are excited to continue this project for many years to come and improve on it each year.
