Composting Pilot Program
Vision
This project aimed to promote sustainability, increase environmental literacy, and reduce our school’s environmental impact by implementing a composting pilot project and diverting waste from landfills. We also aimed to positively impact the general community, as students can use their composting knowledge to implement similar actions at home. Considering this was a pilot project, it was also a trial run for implementing full-time composting beginning in September.
Action
We implemented a compost pilot project using the grant received. The pilot program consisted of having weekly pickup in partnership with Compost Winnipeg, student-led collection, and waste consumption among the student body. Prior to implementation, we planned and executed the project’s outline/details with our administration before hosting a presentation for the entire staff. This allowed us to inform and better encourage staff members to promote our initiative among students. We then presented at a school-wide assembly, briefly explaining our initiative and outlining the do’s and don’ts of composting. This allowed for mutual understanding and education supporting the 3-month program. Since the commencement of our initiative, we’ve upgraded to an additional 64-gallon bin for pickup to accommodate the school’s bursting need for composting. Next year, we anticipate that through the school administration’s support, we will implement full-time composting.
