Doncaster Seed Library

Vision

The students decided that they wanted to start a Seed Library at our school. Our school already has a garden, so they wanted to continue to have an impact on our community’s environment and sustainability by starting a Seed Library. This would provide families and community members with a place to obtain and share seeds that they could take home to plant in their gardens or at their own homes.

Action

We started by reaching out to our parent community and were lucky to find a free cabinet to use as our seed library. We also had seeds donated from a local seed library organization. Once we got the seed library to our school, we painted it and had it installed. Then we spent time sorting and labelling seeds into paper envelopes to make it easier for people to take with them. During this process, we made a slideshow and presented it to classes about how seed libraries work and why they help make communities more sustainable. We also communicated this to the broader school community by including information about the seed library in our school newsletter.
