École des Grands-cèdres Food Forest

Vision

Through an Action Project, we hope to expand our understanding of locally sourced, ethical ways to sustain a community. Through local food growth, you are able to decrease your footprint and gain an understanding of what to plant that will best provide nourishment for your community while simultaneously decreasing the impact we have on climate change. We believe locally sourced ingredients are critical to a healthy environment and community. The school has a commitment to educating youth on the impacts we can have on our environment and how we as individuals can make changes. This led us to consider the importance of local food sources. We can focus on organic growing, composting, and which plants grow best in our environment.

Action

Together with students, parents, staff and community members, we have completely renovated our school garden. We went from overgrown beds to beds ready for planting as well as filling many of the beds with food plants and trees. Using locally sources plants, we have been able to create a food forest. From apples to kale, the garden will be used both for snack as well as cooking materials. The students we able to learn about the importance of compost and complimentary foods. The garden was able to be used during a professional development day as a way to learn about gardening and included teachers from different district and community members. The students absolutely loved the gardening process and the conversations and wonder were abundant.
