Elginburg Grade 4/5 Students Fight to Ban Two Single Use Plastics across Ontario
Vision
My grade 4/5 class was terribly concerned with all the plastic in local streams and lakes, and from the reports of islands in the ocean. They decided to work to get some single use plastics banned. They researched the effects of plastic and microplastics in our waterways and food chain, how some places have banned some plastics, and different kinds of plastic.
Action
They voted to ban polystyrene used for food and drink as well as single use plastic shopping bags. Then they composed a petition for Ontario and another for the city of Kingston. We received over 2000 physical signatures for Kingston, and over 1600 signatures were mailed to the parliament of Ontario, where they were read aloud twice by MPP Nathalie des Rosiers. These students made a video letter to the Ontario MPPs and wrote their own lines. MPP Des Rosiers showed it to many MPPs and posted it online for all to see.
