Empowering Youth Through Eco-Art and Service Learning
Vision
At St. Albert Learning Centre, our vision is to empower and engage students through meaningful, hands-on learning that goes beyond the classroom. Rooted in creativity and community service, this project brings together experiential learning, entrepreneurship, and environmental responsibility.
Inspired by our recognition as Canadian School of the Future and recipient of the Michael Monk Award, we launched this initiative to show students that they have the power to make a difference—through their talents, their actions, and their commitment to serving others.
Action
Students began by collecting everyday waste—pop tabs and egg cartons—that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. With creativity and purpose, they handcrafted unique pieces such as keychains and painted paper mâché bowls. Each student kept one piece as a personal memento of their learning.
They then created additional items to be sold at a series of craft sales hosted by schools across our school board in Fall 2025. Our students will attend and actively participate in these events, gaining valuable experience while proudly showcasing their work.
In addition to developing artistic and entrepreneurial skills, students will earn volunteer hours for “working” the craft sales. All proceeds will support our parish outreach project to feed the homeless, allowing students to extend their impact beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community.
Reflection & Celebration
This project has been a powerful reminder that when students are given purpose-driven opportunities, they rise to the occasion with passion and pride. Our learners were fully engaged—from collecting materials and crafting beautiful pieces, to preparing for and participating in craft sales across our school board.
They found joy in the process and confidence in their abilities. Many said they felt a deep sense of accomplishment seeing their work appreciated by others. Through this initiative, students didn’t just earn a credit —they gained real-world skills, built strong connections with their community, and lived out the Catholic Graduate Expectation of being Responsible Citizens.
To honour their efforts and celebrate their success, we will be hosting a special lunch with our Parish Priest and Deacon. This gathering will not only recognize the students’ creativity and service, but also reaffirm the importance of faith, community, and giving back.
