Vision

This project was and will continue to be completed by the students that have been participating in the bike shop maintenance sessions all year. Students have been learning about bicycle maintenance and have been encouraged to look at cycling as an everyday activity. Students have been working with school teachers and The WRENCH (a community non profit cycling community bike shop). The students have worked in a capacity this year to setup the new location of the school bike shop as well as participating in the “cycle of giving”. This is a program that gives repaired bikes to youth during the winter holidays. Students are now working to finalize a bike camping trip and community maintenance days and free bike valet for school community events.

Action

For this action project, students will be leading a community bike maintenance evening. They will setup a number of repair stations and provide basic spring maintenance for community members and other students so they can get riding. Students will incorporate this event with another school event to ensure community foot traffic. During this event we will help parents, students and community members size their bikes, provide safety rides, encourage use of the neighbourhood active transit routes, promote the use of the school bike cage and provide basic tune ups at no charge.

Reflection & Celebration

The students have fully embraced this action project. We have been present at the bike cage many mornings and are helping to encourage more cycling to and from school. Almost all of the bikes that have come to school have required some form of maintenance. This has prompted more interest in the bike shop (located in the school) and talks of cycling. We are now gearing up for the large community celebration and if current feedback is any indication it will be a great success.
