Growing Change

Vision

Our vision is to study, develop, and fabricate our own energy, water, and space efficient hydroponic gardens for our school. In order to save on our carbon footprint and water consumption, our students have built a hydroponic garden for our classroom. We would like to be able to provide food for our entire school while learning how to use rainwater capture technology and advanced ways to grow fruit and vegetables. We would like to incorporate solar technology and passive energy systems in a fully sustainable shipping container in the future.

Action

Our students planned, manufactured, and coded a fully self sustaining NFT hydroponic garden. While using recycled material, our students manufactured the system to be controlled by an Arduino computer chip. The system reads pH levels, nutrient content, temperature and humidity, while making adjustments to those levels. our students also created an app to be able to read the levels on their phones. We were able to harvest two full crops off of our system and are currently growing tomatoes.

Reflection & Celebration

Due to Covid, our crops have been sporadic as our students have been in and out of our school. We have harvested crops of lettuce, tomatoes and peppers. Currently we are growing over a hundred strawberries in our system and hope to be continuously harvesting from our garden throughout the school year.
