Helping our Pollinators

Vision

In science, we’ve been putting a large emphasis on living sustainably and being global citizens. While doing research on pollinators, students realized how many foods we would not have if it weren’t for pollinators. Students also realized that pollinator numbers were declining globally. The vision of this project is to help bees, butterflies and other pollinators in our area.

Action

For our project, students decided to help the pollinators around our school’s community garden. They did research on what plants would be best for pollinators and started growing these seeds (milkweed, marigold, sunflowers, etc). They also planted lavender and a variety of other plants around the community garden. They are responsible for working the soil, checking for problems, counting pollinators and watering multiple times weekly. Hopefully, this will draw pollinators to our community garden and increase vegetable production this year.

Reflection & Celebration

Students are extremely happy with the work they’ve done in our community garden. Some students had never did any gardening before, so it was a new experience that they wish to continue doing. Hopefully, having more pollinators will increase vegetable production for our cafeteria in the fall.
