Hydroponics

Vision

To have access to fresh, locally grown food in the school. Students are growing their own food.

Action

Purchase and implement three hydroponic systems in the school (10-pod and 12-pod). Use the food in the Food and Nutrition course: implement food for recipes that students can prepare in class. Science: students can monitor the pH levels and make observations on the growth of plants. Physical Education and Health: students can look at the nutritional value of foods that are grown in the school.

Reflection & Celebration

We had to modify the type of system to buy. Rather than a larger and more expensive unit, we went with three smaller units. Students thought that this would better fit the budget, but also be more flexible as to where to set these up, seeing as there is not a lot of space required to set this up. This type of growing system is very convenient and useful for northern communities that have a short growing season.
