Jardin Ecole Provencher

Vision

To create a garden for the students of Ecole Provencher through which they could explore themes of sustainability and experience hands-on science.

Action

The Garden Planning Committee arranged for garden boxes to be built at the local Trades School in our division. We also surveyed the entire school and asked what they would like to see planted in our garden. Seeds and soil were procured through another grant and students from different classes within the school planted seeds in March and April. The Teacher-Librarian will work with each classroom as they direct sow, transplant, water, weed and harvest from our new garden beds. Parents from the community have already committed to volunteer throughout the summer months to continue the garden care and will be attending an information evening in June to learn how to do so. The funding from LSF was integral to the success of this project and the purchase of necessary materials.

Reflection & Celebration

Students were very involved with selecting fruits and vegetables to grow. They participated enthusiastically in the planting of seeds, the transplanting of plants and the caring of the garden. We are very grateful to Louis Riel Arts and Technology Center in the division who engaged secondary students to build and deliver the garden boxes to our school.
