JD Hogarth PS – Aquaponics
Vision
To feed students within our school with the least environmental impact.
Action
Our project was to design an aquaponics system. This system had multiple functions within our learning commons space. It was built and designed to add a point of interest and discussion within our learning commons around sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. The aquaponics system was built with the intention of supporting and enhancing our food program, as well as providing our outdoor garden with a head start in the spring.
This initiative is important to our students because they have been cooking every Monday and Thursday for 316 students. They have seen first-hand the amount of waste, plastic wrapping and carbon implications surrounding the food we eat. They were inspired to build and design an aquaponics system through the lens of cooking for their community in an environmentally conscious manner.
Reflection & Celebration
Student innovation and problem solving.
