Knowlesville Art & Nature School Garden & Food Project

Vision

We started a LSF action project this winter to address climate action through small cumulative actions such as running a litter less lunch campaign, growing our own seedlings of herbs, flowers and vegetables and starting a vegetarian lunch program 3-days a week with parent volunteer support. It has been a great beginning on a larger vision to make our school grow enough food from our 40’x50′ community garden plot to sustain a large part of our vegetable needs to keep the lunch program going next fall and hopefully through the school year. This has been a way to support everyone at the school getting a nutritious, vegetarian-based meal 3-times a week. Also with the grade 3-6 class, we’ve built an outdoor earthen oven, which we will use to make pizzas and breads for special events out at our garden spot. We are having fun, growing and making our food from organic, local products and feel this is an amazing way for us to learn by doing.

Action

We would love support to continue this work and in particular to support ways of extending / preserving the harvest from our gardens by way of root storage at the school, jars and canning equipment, and would love to build a solar dehydrator for the school.

Reflection & Celebration

Students are really amazing at seeing connections and thinking creatively as to how we can do things better. For a project to involved students in the planning and work of realizing a project, it needs to be dynamic and adaptable to their growing sense of where they want the project to go. We are excited to see what possibilities exist when we are given a bit of support and have students who can be involved through the whole process.
