KVHS Breakfast Program

Vision

We first looked over the Sustainable Development Goals and we also watched a few videos uploaded to the LSF site. A few goals stood out to our class: poverty, hunger, and climate change. We discussed a possible beach clean up or breakfast/lunch program in our school. We weighed the pros and cons and realized that with some time restrictions and available resources that the breakfast program would have a greater impact on our student community and have longer lasting effects. We had to plan where this program would take place, when it would occur, who would continue this long term after our class starts it up, how to keep it funded, and what the program would look like. We invited our principal to our class to share our ideas and ask for her input. Her suggestion was that we create a morning breakfast toast station and that was how we finalized our plans. We created a survey for students asking if they are hungry at school, if they would like/use a toast station, if they would volunteer to be a part of the club we will need to run it long term, and dietary restrictions when asking what type of bread/jam they like. 70% of students responded that they are hungry when they come to school in the morning. 84% said they liked this idea and 35% said they would join our breakfast club. We also found out that 1 in 5 kids in New Brunswick are hungry. With all of this data we decided this was a needed program for our school.

Action

We had to compare prices of bread, toasters, butter, jam, and juice boxes to get the most value for our money. We had looked at getting a conveyor toaster but they started around $400. We bought 2 4-slice toasters, 1 2-slice toaster for our gluten free students, 10 loaves of bread, butter and strawberry jam. We also tested having some juice boxes and purchased 16 packages of orange and apple juice boxes. We had to make sure we followed our provinces healthy school policy. We also complied a list of contacts in the local community who we could reach out to for donations to continue funding this project for the 2023-2024 school year. We had 2 test runs of this toast station program where we invited some classes to attend and provide us with feedback. Overall it was a success and we learned a lot of valuable information that we will apply to the program when it starts to run on a full time basis in the fall. There is also a possible plan of our breakfast club joining the cul-tech teacher to help create more variety to the breakfast program on certain days. The toast station will be the main part as it is easy to supply, operate, and maintain but on certain days there could be something like pancakes or oatmeal!
