Kyuquot School Medicine Garden

Vision

Our vision was to get more connected with local medicines and start doing more science projects with traditional knowledge. These medicinal plants aren’t just used for cuts or colds—they were part of a whole system of care for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. We realized that by relearning these medicines, we were also learning how to live in a sustainable way, connected to the land, and better prepared to face the challenges of climate change.

Action

To build a medicine garden with native plants in front of our school, and to make signs to help teach future generations. This encourages us to access traditional medicines and use place based science more often in our studies.

Reflection & Celebration

We are so excited to have learned so much about medicinal plants and how to grow them. We made choices about which medicines would be most useful to teens, and selected plants that our ancestors would have used. We will now be able to actually study the effects of plant medicines on our own bodies, thimbleberry leaves for acne, Oregon Grape for healthy circulation, Nootka rose for a calming tea, or soothing skin. Delicious evergreen huckleberries for healthy spirits, because they are so good with ice cream. Wild strawberries for joy!
