Lettuce Vertical Garden

Vision

Create a sustainable vertical garden to raise awareness about sustainable food production while providing students with fresh organic lettuce.

Action

We combined a financial grant from “Learning for a Sustainable Future” with an educator discount from the company “Just Vertical” to purchase a vertical garden. The garden was set up in the geography classroom of our school. Geography students grew a variety of lettuce varieties from seed and harvested the produce when it matured. Students volunteered to bring the fresh produce home to their families for consumption. An information card was sent home as well, informing parents about the initiative and the benefits of sustainable food production.

Reflection & Celebration

There was a learning curve to growing the lettuce, but we are getting the hang of it now. Having specific students in charge each week will be helpful. There was an added value of having a green wall in our classroom and the occasional sound of the automatic watering was calming.
