Living Green Wall Action Project

Vision

We wanted to make the school a better place, improve air quality, and make the school more sustainable for the future. We believe that adding a green wall will make our school more sustainable, improve air quality by taking in carbon dioxide and releasing purer oxygen, help our mental health by softening the environment, decrease noise levels by absorbing sound, and increase biodiversity.

Action

Our first idea was a greenhouse. We decided not to do this because it was too expensive, and we were afraid that kids would just wreck it because it was out in the schoolyard. Then we had the idea of doing a green wall because some teachers told us they wanted to see more green life in the school. We chose English Ivy because it was easy to maintain but still helps the environment a lot.

Reflection & Celebration

We made our green wall by buying a hanging pocketed planter and putting the ivy plants in the pockets with soil. We ordered a water pump with a tube, and the water pump pumps water up to the top pockets, and then it slowly drips down through the other pockets so the plants are watering themselves. One challenge we faced while doing this was getting our principal’s permission. We were very nervous, but she made us feel very comfortable. We had many ideas before that one, but we decided that was the best one.
