Nanakataweyimowin Flower Bed

Vision

To bring our community together through rich land-based experiences. The round flower bed represents the cycle of nature and our role as stewards of the land. It is student-named the “Nanakataweyimowin Flower Bed” which is a Cree word representing the concept of looking out for one another. It is located outside the counsellor’s wing and will provide an area of reflection and calm. This year, it is planted with orange flowers and pumpkins to support the Every Child Matters Movement. Each year, the students will decide on a theme that supports our community.

Action

We assembled a flower bed four feet in diameter and three feet high to allow for accessibility. The students carried several wheel barrels of topsoil uphill to fill the bed, and we topped it off with pro-mix. We added marigolds and gerbera daises for immediate colour. The horticulture class also planted pumpkin seeds from a last year’s garden pumpkin and extra flowers earlier in the spring. These plants will be added once the nights are warmer. We added a food component to support the communities food sovereignty goals. Our land-based culture students have been adding orange rocks at the base painted with various designs to represent children. This is the first step in developing this area, and we will be adding seating next.

Reflection & Celebration

We will be having a wrap-up social event next week to thank our students for their commitment and hard work.
