Natural Playground and Outdoor Classroom
Vision
Highlands Elementary School was rebuilt within the past decade, and the remaining school ground was desolate, with grey stone covering the entire play space, leaving the school ground suboptimal for both play and learning. We wanted to build a welcoming natural playground and outdoor classroom that could be utilized year round for both teaching and free play.
Action
We designed a play centred natural playground with trees, plants, boulders for both play and seating, a teaching structure, balance elements such as logs and rocks. We have incorporated a variety of flowering and non flowering plants and trees to attract and support various insect, butterfly and bird species. We have also included a dry river bed, allowing for teaching around water ecosystems.
