Our Gardens

Vision

Our vision was to create gardens that would be accessible to all staff, students, and community members and that would be sustainable for years to come.

Action

Three classes worked with our school librarian to create gardens for our school and community members. We worked with an Indigenous designer named Kateri from Miinikaan Innovation & Design. Her designs included the location and the specific plants that we should be planting in our gardens. My students got to work digging up the sod and laying down the new soil. We built 2 garden boxes and are using them to grow our corn, beans, and squash. Our grade 11 NBE class has been growing plants in their classroom to add them to our gardens.

Reflection & Celebration

This was a huge undertaking and we still have more work to do, but we are proud of our accomplishments. This will be an ongoing project. We have already been contacted by a local elementary school that would like to partner with us for the next school year. We are hoping to extend our garden and invite more classes to be a part of it.
