Outdoor Garden

Vision

Our vision was that this project would help the students understand that people can grow and share their own food. The students in Grade 2/3 were inspired to continue to learn about growing their own food through the Little Green Thumbs program. They began an indoor garden in March and have had huge success. They then wanted to try an outdoor garden. They also wanted to share their experience with their peers from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
Learning to be self-sufficient is important. Students are always amazed that they can eat what they can grow.

Action

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 worked together to build and plant an outdoor garden with the hopes of harvesting it when we return in the Fall. We planted traditional Newfoundland root vegetables (potato, turnip, carrot, beet, cabbage) in our garden and we will tend the garden over the summer months through a volunteer schedule. Upon returning to school, we will harvest our garden and prepare a meal for the entire school population using the vegetables grown.
