P.A.W. (Plastic and Water)
Vision
Plastic pollution is a big problem in our watersheds. It affects marine life and animals. We are hoping to educate more people about this problem and do our best to keep animals safe by informing people about the implications of plastic use.
Action
We emailed an ecologist from Canadian Forest Service to learn more about plastic pollution and to hear an expert opinion. As a group, we also cleaned up about 600 m of shoreline on the St. John River in our city of Fredericton, New Brunswick. There were a lot of plastic bags, soda cans, masks and water bottles. As a result, we collected 3 bags of garbage. We could see more garbage, but we were not able to get to it because of the high-water levels. We made a survey to collect information and to learn what people already know about plastic pollution. To advertise the survey, we put up posters with QR codes for easy access. Finally, to educate people, we made a spinning wheel with 8 facts about plastic pollution and presented it to our classes.
Reflection & Celebration
On June 1st, 2023, our school is having an Open House in the evening for our school community. We will have our Action Project on display on a poster board. We will play our video on a laptop for people to watch. We will continue to educate our classmates by inviting them to watch our video. We found it rewarding to educate our classmates about the problem of plastics.
