Plant More Trees
Vision
Our vision is to plant more trees in our very wide open school year. These trees not only combat climate change, but provide shade on hot days, a home for animals, clean our air, and make our yard a more beautiful place to spend time.
Action
Our action project was to plant trees in our backfield. Our backfield has very few trees, and there is nowhere to go for shade on hot days or special events like track and field. We wanted to plant trees that are native to our climate, so we chose to plant 3 muckle plums along our back path.
Our Changemakers groups decided to spend our grant money on trees because they are amazing. They clean our air, provide shade, capture carbon, and much more. Through planting the trees, we were able to raise awareness about deforestation and other issues related to climate change.
Plus, they look beautiful. We chose the muckle plum as it blooms beautiful pink flowers, which was chosen in memory of a student who passed away recently. We wanted to provide her with a beautiful living tribute in her favourite colour, pink.
We reached out to local companies in hopes that they would help us reach our goal of a living tribute. Ron Paul’s Garden Centre was extremely generous and helped us surpass our vision by delivering and planting our trees free of charge. Instead of one tree, we were able to plant three with their support.
Reflection & Celebration
This project was incredibly important for our community as it is a living tribute to a beautiful student and will be enjoyed for years to come. It was also a great accomplishment as we have been met with a lot of “no’s” and red tape in the past from our division when it came to planting anything on our school property. It should not be this hard to do something good for the community and our planet. In the end, this was a huge victory for our club and a long time in the making. We hope to continue to add more trees in the future and diversify our walking path.
