Recycling and Apple Trees

Vision

We initially wanted to run a compost program for our school, but after looking at how we were doing at recycling, we decided that it was better to invest some time and effort into getting our school community to recycle properly. By only putting what you are able in the recycling bins, we are able to actually recycle instead of having all of recycling bags going to garbage. We did some education, ran a contest and voila, we have become really great recyclers at East Ridge! With the rest of our grant money, we decided we wanted to start growing some food to be consumed by our students. We purchased 3 – 4 in 1 apple trees and we have started a Fall garden, in hopes that we will have some food to share with our Breakfast Club Program in the Fall.

Action

– Educate students on proper recycling
– Follow up and ensure only recyclables are going in the bin
– Plant food that can be used by students for many years to come (3 – 4 in 1 apple trees)
– Plant a Fall Garden

Reflection & Celebration

In the Fall we will celebrate with any food that we are able to harvest. This will be a good time for us to reflect and see what we would like to add to our garden for next year.
