Salad Bar
Vision
Helping to create food security, access to healthy food for staff and students and the desire to support beneficial insects through growing our own early season crops.
Action
Students came up with a plan to seed and grow a variety of early season crops which can be harvested and shared prior to the end of the school season. They researched which seeds took longer to germinate and started them off in a hydroponic garden. Students assembled the raised planter and were responsible for seeding, transplanting, monitoring and caring for the plants. Early crops like lettuce, radish, swiss chard, herbs and edible flowers were selected. Produce will be harvested and shared out in ready-to-eat salad bags.
Reflection & Celebration
Students are engaged in growing their own crops and have shown great leadership in creating and implementing their plans. The small garden has created a sense of accomplishment and community within the school. Students are already planning to expand and continue with this project.
