SBDHS Thrift Shop

Vision

Educate students about fast fashion and fashion waste while promoting sustainable fashion options such as thrifting!

Action

Following the LSF Youth Climate Action Forum, our student-led sustainability club was filled with ideas on how to promote sustainability within our school community. After a lot of discussion, the club decided our first club project would be a school-wide thrift shop. Step one was to convince the student body to donate clothes. We implemented a credit system which turned our thrift shop into a thrift swap. Any article of clothing donated resulted in a credit to be used at the thrift store. We ran the thrift shop during lunchtime for an entire week. Overall it was a massive success! It was great to see students wearing their “new” clothing the following day at school, and every day, we had students coming back to see if there was any more they could find. The students really wanted to promote sustainable fashion and a closed-loop fashion industry. It was so successful there is plans to run another thrift shop next year!

Reflection & Celebration

The thrift shop was a great success. The students really enjoyed “shopping” during their lunch and loved the swap concept of the thrift store. Although we didn’t make any money (which we initially planned to use later on our composting program), we do plan on running another thrift shop next year!
