School Composting Program

Vision

At École Sacré-Coeur, we wanted to introduce a composting program to help reduce the amount of waste going into landfills as well as help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere. We are excited to have the compost bin convert waste into soil which can then be used in our school’s garden and flower boxes. This will help reduce future costs by reducing the amount of soil we have to purchase for said planter boxes.

Action

There was some staff turnover at École Sacré-Coeur and the teacher who was going to get the composting program off the ground went to another school. As a result, our composting project did not get started as early as was hoped. We only just recently purchased a compost bin as well as a compost pail for each classroom. A grade one teacher has been teaching her students about composting and they have started the composting project at the whole-school level. There will be learning in the rest of the classrooms as to the benefits of composting and how/what we compost. Next school year, it is anticipated that a leadership group comprised of junior high students will take over the composting program.

Reflection & Celebration

The staff member who left École Sacré-Coeur felt terrible when she left the school and could not see this project through. It took a little while before another staff member picked up the project. In the end, it was decided to start the project in the spring once the weather was better here in Winnipeg. Despite some challenges and set-backs, École Sacré-Coeur is proud that the compost program is up and running!
