Shea Heights Environmental Clean up
Vision
Our vision was to clean up the areas most important to us in our community. We wanted to ensure that these areas would be clean and safe for everyone so that they could enjoy nature to its fullest.
Action
For our action project, our students looked at what was a pressing issue in their community. They were concerned about the amount of litter that was left lying about in some of the favourite places for kids to spend in their own time. We identified several key areas throughout the community that children frequent and planned on what kind of actions we could take. Students brainstormed and decided that we would clean up the litter that surrounded the local community center, the softball field and skate park, the school and playground, and a local pond and trail.
Students created a schedule for what areas we would tackle during the month of May when the snow finally melted for us. Each week, we focused on one area with a culminating full day clean up around the river next to the community center. Leading up to this day, students researched what equipment would be needed to have a successful clean up. Students organized themselves into action groups to tackle different areas around the river. The students also designed posters to advertise and advise others around the school on the importance of cleaning up our environment.
We were also able to acquire a tray of tree saplings from Forestry NL that we will plant around the community during the month of June.
Students believed that cleaning up litter would inspire other students and others in the community to take pride in their environment and look to protect it. They want to ensure that their favourite places to hang out remain beautiful and healthy. not only for them but the animals that call those places home.
Reflection & Celebration
Through our actions, we were able to clean up over 60kg of garbage and recycling! We were also able to clean up our precious river running near our Community Center and clean around Beaver Pond, allowing the animals that call those places home to live safe and healthy lives.
We will also be planting tree saplings throughout the community to make sure that our green spaces stay as green as possible!
