Student Square Foot Gardens

Vision

Our climate change club came up with two ideas to help with global warming.

The first was to get as many students at our school involved with square foot gardening as possible. They thought we could provide kits with seeds and a planting map for a salad garden, and instructions on how to create a square foot garden. In this way, students could be encouraged to think about food security and sustainability and reduce their own carbon footprint by growing some of their own food. The club produced a PowerPoint to explain our rationale and provide the instructions on how students could use the kit to create their own backyard gardens. The club made 200 kits and distributed them to the students who were really interested.

The second idea was to provide some support to our bees who are suffering from environmental factors as well as from the effects of climate change. The students thought that hanging a bee box in our eco-classroom and planting some wild flowers in a pollinator garden would help our wild bee population.

Action

200 kits were created and distributed to the students. Dissolvable tape was used for the seeds because we wanted to avoid using plastic baggies or any non-compostable products. The seeds, along with the instructions and plating guide (as well as a 4ft length of twine to measure out their 4ft x 4ft garden), were put into a mini plain paper bag and distributed to the students. The instructions included composting instructions for the paper bag and the twine so that there was no waste produced.

The club planted wildflower seeds in the pollinator garden and hung the bee box in the outdoor classroom.

Reflection & Celebration

The kids really enjoyed the project…they were so enthusiastic and really felt a sense of pride giving out the kits to their fellow students!
