Sustainable Style Swap
Vision
The Sustainable Style Swap was inspired by the concept of circular economy. This is an excellent way for our community to support students who are in financial and resource need and to reduce inequalities within our community. We use this program to educate our school community about Responsible Consumption and Production and share environmental facts about the clothing industry. This reduces our community’s carbon footprint and contributes to a sustainable city.
Action
Our school community is encouraged to donate lightly used clothing to our main office, and a group of dedicated students sort through the donations and prepare clothing for our Sustainable Style Swap room, where students can shop for free. We run a back-to-school clothing drive, spring clothing drive and a prom clothing drive, as well as accept donations at any time. We also hosted a fundraiser for the war in Ukraine last year and sent a bunch of donation items to the war effort.
Reflection & Celebration
This is a concept that is easily replicated. We have inspired other schools in our school board to take on their own Sustainable Style Swap. We have also been featured in local papers with our efforts. We have had many parents reach out to thank this program for helping their families during tough financial times. We have had students in transition access these clothes when they needed help. We have opened our doors on community nights, serving the wider community. This is something that the CW community is proud of and it’s an easy way to care for one another.
