Tackling Food Security in Vancouver

Vision

We are working towards our goal of learning about food security in Vancouver as a school community. We have a goal of collecting and donating 2000 non-perishable food items this year.

Action

– We have been collecting non-perishable food items at school events all year. We have collected roughly 1000 non-perishable food items thus far.
– We held a school event called Trafalgar Circles. Mixed-grade groupings worked with teachers in smaller classes to learn about food waste through discussion, mapping, and media. Students of all ages helped each other to learn about where food pantries, community gardens and low-cost groceries can be found in Vancouver and Burnaby. Great conversations were had about food security and our community.
– We held a school movie night where we hosted our school community and showed a documentary on food waste called Just Eat It.
– We created a green club with some of our student leaders and focus on different environmentally friendly activities once every week, including some related to food security.
