Team 17 Educates the Community

Vision

Our student-driven club, Team 17, wants to teach others about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that the United Nations wants the world to achieve by 2030. Our team members will be young adults but strive to make a difference now. Team 17 wanted to make a full-length video that could educate our local elementary schools about the 17 SDGs. The vision was for this video to be educational but engaging and entertaining as well. The students did not want to focus on just the negatives but also on everyday solutions we could all try.

Action

Team 17 wrote, acted, filmed and edited a full-length video with the ultimate goal of visiting local elementary schools and present to grades 5 and 6 students. This video was created completely by Team 17 members (including 2 teachers). The students then reached out to their old elementary teachers and principals and asked to be invited into classes to present the video and engage with the students. To date, the students have attended 6 elementary schools, 15 classes and educated nearly 350 people. We have also shared this with our school community, over 450 students and their families via the school newsletter.

Reflection & Celebration

The students were incredibly excited to share their video and their knowledge of the goals. They enjoyed creating it but wish we had the time to do a slightly better job editing. It was hard to splice it all together as each group worked on their own part(s) of the project. Almost every team member went to an elementary school to present, with some attending multiple times. It was an incredible experience for all students involved. Our group members are diverse and we are proud of our individualities.
