The Hydroponic Setup

Vision

At our school, we envision a future where every student becomes a steward of the Earth—empowered with the knowledge, skills, and passion to lead sustainable change.

Through innovative projects like hydroponic farming, we are:

Reducing our carbon footprint by growing fresh, local produce year-round—right in our classrooms.

Saving water and resources by using efficient, eco-friendly systems that protect the planet.

Overcoming climate challenges, proving that even in Winnipeg’s harsh winters, healthy food can be grown sustainably.

Inspiring environmental leadership by giving students hands-on experience with real-world solutions to global problems.

Building community resilience by sharing our produce, knowledge, and success with others.

Our vision is to transform our school into a hub of green innovation—where science, sustainability, and social responsibility grow side by side.

By expanding our hydroponics program, we hope to make a city-wide impact in Winnipeg and serve as a model for schools everywhere. We believe that small actions—like growing lettuce in a classroom—can lead to big change for our world.

Action

Overview:

As part of our commitment to sustainability and innovation, our school launched a hydroponic farming project to explore soil-free methods of growing food. This initiative aims to address global environmental concerns while offering practical solutions right here in Winnipeg.

Journey and Learning:

We began by setting up a hydroponic system with great enthusiasm. However, our early attempts faced multiple setbacks—plants failed to grow, and our seedlings didn’t survive. After careful investigation, we discovered the problem: the pH level of the water was not suitable for healthy plant growth.

With hands-on guidance and research, our students learned how to test and adjust the pH to the optimal range. This marked a turning point in the project.

Successes:

Once conditions were corrected, we saw strong growth in a variety of green leafy vegetables, including:

Lettuce

Kale

Spinach

Other greens

Our first harvest of lettuce and kale is now ready, and the excitement is growing as we wait for tomatoes and bell peppers to mature.

Bigger Purpose – Local Action, Global Impact:

This project is more than just a school experiment. It is our way of:

Reducing carbon footprint by growing food locally and eliminating transportation emissions.

Tackling climate challenges by growing produce year-round—even in Winnipeg’s harsh winters.

Inspiring change by proving that sustainable agriculture is possible anywhere, even in urban school settings.

We believe that by educating young minds and empowering them to grow food sustainably, we are helping create a greener, healthier future for our city and the planet.

Why We’re Entering the $3000 Draw:

We want to scale up this project to include more systems, more student involvement, and more produce. Winning the $3000 would allow us to:

Expand our hydroponic setup

Add grow lights and sensors

Introduce fruiting plants and herbs

Share produce with our school and local community

Our dream is to make this a model project for other schools in Winnipeg—and to show that real change can start in the classroom.
